We are regularly asked for advice on what hardware or software is needed to produce quality recordings and what file types we accept. We hope the answers below allay your worries about the technical specifications of your audio dictation. For full information, visit our Technical Info page.
Our typists use specialist software to transcribe your dictation from audio file. This software has the capacity to recognise and/or convert most sound-file types. We can accept most file formats including mp3, dss, mp4, WAV etc. We can also accept online recordings, or the old fashioned cassette tapes.
Our clients upload their audio files to our file sharing portal, or the files are emailed, depending on the client’s preference. WAV files are the largest so we recommend you compress these files to MP3 for faster transfer.
What equipment do I need for recording?
You can produce your dictation from audio file using a variety of recorders depending on your personal preference. Most audio dictations are produced using some form of digital recorder (e.g. a digital Dictaphone) but increasingly, clients are using software or apps on their phone or other device. Many of these can also be used to record phone conversations without the need for specialist equipment. It is not unusual for our clients to do dual recording of important meetings or conversations to ensure that a quality file is available, but this is, again, a matter of choice.
